Changing Administrator password: server not available

I have a Macbook Pro 2021 M1 and I want to change my password. I followed several suggestions from the Apple community but nothing works. The last one was to shut down the computer and keep pressing the start button until I have the Options screen; I then press to continue as indicated; and I am supposed to got o Top Bar>> Utilities... but I never see the option Utilities there. I never get the chance to find Terminal and type resetpassword. Please, help me. For security reasons I need to change my Mac's password.

The usual method is described here: Change the login password on Mac - Apple Support, but the context of your question implies that method is not working. Instead, you want to find a way around it using the Reset Password assistant. To do that follow If you can't reset your Mac login password - Apple Support, under Apple silicon:

  • Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window. Select the gear icon labeled Options, then click Continue.

You will almost certainly need to contact Apple Support, but just so that I understand: once you get to that screen and choose a User Account, is there no option to provide a password, or an Apple ID for that user?

The several options that follow that step begin with "if" because not all of them may be available for all User Accounts, or all Macs, but the Reset Password Assistant is where you need to eventually arrive to avoid having to erase the Mac.

Read what is very likely to become necessary under "If no other solution is successful, you have the option to reset your password by erasing your Mac," but before proceeding with that ultimate solution then by all means contact Apple Support to confirm you exhausted all available options: Contact Apple Support. For example, they may suggest using another device to log in to your iCloud Account with your Apple ID credentials to confirm they are correct, and possibly use that option to reset your Mac's password. Presumably you used your Apple ID and its password to log into this site, so those credentials ought to be ok. Using them to reset your Mac's password may or may not be an option, but if it is they can talk you through it.

Good luck!

Dear John, thanks for replying to my message. Unfortunately, that has been done several times. I turn on my Mac... once there then it asks me to choose an administrator that I remember the password. After that there is no option that resembles changing a password. I just got stuck there. Sadly, I never find any screen that presents a password assistant.
