Hey farm_astronaut,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

The @gmail.com is the domain for Google email services. In order for you to use a custom domain, you must first have a personal domain that you've purchased/created.

Since "@gmail.com" is a domain for Google, you wouldn't be able to use the Gmail address. For for more information about this, review this article: Personalize iCloud Mail with a custom email domain and share with others.

Take care.
