original photo kept when I shoot using 16:9 aspect ratio

When I take a photo in 16:9 aspect ratio the iOS 16.3.1 keeps also the photo in aspect ratio 4:3, basically editing this one as if you will use the crop function. Is this a normal behavior or there is a way when I shoot with one of the aspect ratio selected there will be only 1 photo saved on the disk.

Thank you for your response, but I was not referring to that one, I'm referring when you take photos not editing videos. When you take a photo, you have an option to choose what aspect ratio, 16:9, 4:3 or square, the image will be. The camera sensor, from what I understood has 4:3 aspect ratio, so all the photos will be initially taken in this format. When I tried to download the photos into my computer I saw, there are 2 photos on the phone, one in the aspect ratio 4:3 and the other one marked with IMG_E... in the aspect ratio selected by me in the camera. I thought when I select an aspect ratio directly from the camera it should normally save only one file into the phone memory. Is there a way to do that ?

Hi iph005,

We understand that when you're importing photos to your computer, you see two of the same photos in different formats, is that right?

Do you happen to use iCloud Photos or another service to store your photos elsewhere other than your iPhone?

What type of computer are you using to import your photos?

You can also reference this link which explains how to transfer your photos from your iPhone to your computer: Transfer photos and videos from your iPhone or iPad to your Mac or PC - Apple Support

Does your iPhone also show two of the same photo? This article will show you how to locate duplicate photos on your iPhone: Find and delete duplicate photos and videos on iPhone - Apple Support

We look forward to your reply.

Take care!

Hello iph005,

After you've finished making your edits to a video and select the Done button, it'll give you two options:

Save Video as New Clip - This saves the edited version as a new copy, you'll still have the original unedited copy of the video in your camera roll.

Save Video - This will replace the original version of the video with the edited version, so you'll only have one copy of the video in your camera roll.

If you only want to have one version of the video in your camera roll, you'll want to select the Save Video option.

Cheers!

Hi, Yes that is right, the photos are stored in the iPhone memory, my question is only regard to save memory on iPhone. I could easily take photos using 4:3 format only, but I thought since I've got these extra options directly from the camera menu, it will save only in that format, and not cropped in the background. The duplication doesn't occur in Images, it shows correctly in the format I took the image. I'm using Win 10 and connect the iPhone via USB to a PC to view images stored in the mobile's memory.
