just received iphone. when phone rings I only hear it once then it gets quiet, also when on phone can only hear well when it is on speaker. I already tried closing all apps working in background and made sure it is NOT in silent mode

When it rings are you looking at your phone? If so you have attention aware features enabled, go to face id and passcode settings to turn it off.
