Rename in Preview - name disappears?
I have been having this issue for years(!) (on difference Macs!), but recently it's gotten worse.
Typical scenario: I download a .pdf from the internet, click "Open in System Viewer," and then go to "File ---> Rename."
What's supposed to happen: the title of the .pdf at the top is selected and highlighted (in blue), typing on the keyboard changes the title.
What often happens: the title of the .pdf at the top disappears! Typing does nothing (except if I click the delete button the keyboard, then the title will reappear and we're back to square one, you still can't rename the document).
Old fix: for years(!) I had this problem (on different Macs, I tell you!), and I saw a proposed fix on Google --- funny, I can no longer find any info about this bug on the web...? --- where you use "File ---> Export" to generate a *new* version of the .pdf and then rename that one. IIRC it was because the file permissions weren't changed when you downloaded it off the net, etc.
Problem: this fix is no longer working for me. I export the file, and yet the problem often persists with the exported version.
Weirdly, I had one .pdf where I exported it, changed the name, and then when I tried to change the name a second time, it went back into "disappearing glitch" mode. I am playing with that .pdf right now and maybe one in five Rename attempts give me the "disappearing glitch" and the remainder work as intended.
Is it really just me? I thought for a while this was a known bug, but I'm no longer seeing much in the way of discussion about it on the web.
(I know about "Option/File ---> Save as" --- that isn't a good fix for me. With "Rename," I can directly read off the title of the actual text document, usually a research paper, and type it into the title of the .pdf file --- Rename allows you to continue to read the .pdf while you rename it, which is why it's nice when it works. If I use "Save As" or even "Export" for that matter, then the drop-down box covers up the .pdf and I have to memorize the title beforehand, which is a pain.)
