Extremely Blurry Screen M1 MacBook Pro 16

Hello! I’ve got an M1 MacBook Pro 16 from my work. I’ve been using it just fine, but recently the internal display just randomly got insanely blurry (it’s practically a black screen). I generally use my Mac with an external display connected via thunderbolt usb c, and that works fine. It’s just the internal display.


Is there any way to fix this, or is this just a screen hardware issue? I’ve attached a photo that shows what this looks like during boot, where you might usually see the apple logo and a loading bar. It’s clearly distorted and just barely recognizable. I can still control the laptop, but when I get to the login screen it’s just a big gray blob.

I have the exact same problem. I signed on to tell others about how I was able to solve it myself. Since I could not see the screen, I connected an HDMI cable to my TV. I booted into recovery mode, which required, closing the screen, which would not let me access the keyboard and mouse, of course. I was able to use a Bluetooth mouse that I had paired while I had access when the TV was connected this let me select the first option in the recovery screen, and then I was able to open the screen and use the keyboard and mouse, to erase the partition and reinstall OS X, I did this in preparation for sending the computer in for service as I did not want to have my proprietary data at risk, but I was surprised to find that once the installation was complete, the screen came back. I’m completing the reinstall now, but the fact that the screen is back on likely means it will stay that way. Fingers crossed…

Same issue here too. Extremely disappointing, given that my laptop is only 1 year and 2 months old. I brought it to the Apple Store and the only solutions I was given were spending $600 in a new Mac monitor or using an external (cheaper) monitor.

So was all your data fine? It was just a display issue? Having the same problem myself. It started the other day whilst working in Ableton. I was able to restart after several failed attempts. Then, today it happened again and won’t restart. I stupidly didn’t back it up with Time Machine (most of my most important files are backed up.


It’s a hardware issue, so they should be able to fix it while preserving the data, correct?

Superb! What country are you located in? I'm sure the rules differ from country to country, but I'd love to give this a shot too and point out to the customer service to look up the Consumer law by Apple to process this for free.

This is a great take. I do have an iPad which I usually put in the same pocket as my laptop in my backpack, the cover for the iPad does have magnets, so this could somehow have caused this. Anyone else that has had magnets close to their laptop before this happened?

It’s unfortunate. I’m hoping to get some information from Apple or someone who does repairs to confirm the most likely cause of the issue. It seems like a backlight flex cable type of issue but who knows. Tried to share my experiences with support on here, in regard to addressing and identifying the issue but it was flagged for some reason. Long story short, it will set you back around $800 USD. We’re gunna have to sit tight and see if higher frequency of complaints of the same issue result in recall.

I'm experiencing the same dark and blurry display issue after 18 months of ownership. I will add that I noticed some screen flickering a few weeks before, and a few instances where the screen went out but came back after closing and re-opening a few minutes later. Then it became a permanent problem.


Apple support referred me to a local authorized Apple Service Provider. I told him I tried all the tests and tricks without success, but that I've been using an external monitor without problems. He checked for physical damage, but saved me the $35 intake fee for them to run the same tests I've already done. He said that the graphics card is fine if it worked with my external monitor. Basically, I would be charged $925 for a full screen replacement. He said he had not heard of any widespread display issues since the 2016 models.


Those of us with this issue may be on the early end of something that points to a larger manufacturing issue, or we are just an unlucky batch. Either way, no recalls or warranty extensions have been offered by Apple to resolve this yet.


A 16-inch M1 Macbook of the same age without screen issues is valued at $1.5-2K. So, spending nearly $1K for a replacement screen is unreasonable. Plus, how long would a replacement screen last? Another 18 months?
