if i tie my apple watch to my shoe laces will it count my steps when i walk on the treadmill

I recently began using a walking pad/treadmill under my desk but my iWatch/phone aren’t tracking my steps/distance. Is there a way to do this without having to put the watch in my pocket or around my ankle? I’d like to still track other metrics while walking.

It will however probably damage it.
