I saw some conversations on this from 2020, but wondered if there had been any updates? I recently began using a walking pad/treadmill under my desk but my iWatch/phone aren’t tracking my steps/distance. Is there a way to do this without having to put the watch in my pocket or around my ankle? I’d like to still track other metrics while walking.

The only way the watch can count your steps is by how and how often you swing your arms (or your ankle if you are wearing it there). AFAIK, there are no "updates" for that.
