In iOS 16, you can recover deleted messages in the Messages app. Open the Messages app and select Edit in the top left. Select Show Recently Deleted. Messages that have been deleted are stored for 30 - 40 days, after which they are deleted automatically.
If the messages are not in Recently Deleted, they cannot be restored.
