Cannot select cells when entering formula.

After I enter into formula typing I have to wait a few seconds or click several times to select cells.

I can type cells or anything but cannot select cells.

Couldn't find any related thread and ran out of ideas, please help.

As I read it, you click on a cell, press the = key, and the Formula Editor appears. (I've dragged the editor down and left, to uncover E3, the cell into which I'm entering a formula.)

When you then type the beginning of a formula ( example: '200*' ) then click cell B3 to insert that address in the formula, the result should display as below:

But in your case, that does not occur.

What does happen in your case?

A screen shot might be useful.

To take a screen shot of part of the screen:

  • Place the pointer at the top left corner of the area you want to capture
  • Press Shift-Command-4 to change the pointer icon to a cross hair
  • Drag the pointer down and right to create a rectangle containing the part of the screen to be captured.
  • Release the mouse button/track pad to capture the shot.

To place the shot in your post:

  • Click in the post where you want to insert the image.
  • Click the 'mountains and moon' icon in the row below the composing box.
  • Choose (click) the screen shot (usually the most recent) in the list that appears.

Definitely odd behaviour, but not the "cannot select cells with my cursor" claimed in your initial post.

In the GIF supplied, after several clicks on cells returning no response, you clicked on cell D3, then Cell C3, with this result:

Each of those clicks resulted in the clicked cell's address being inserted into the formula being built. Further clicks also added to the formula.

Later:

Here the SUM function was likely entered from the keyboard, and the two range references may have been entered that way as well.

Not an issue I've seen before, so not much help from this corner. Thanks for the example. Badunit seems to have a better handle on the issue, and, I hope, may reach a solution.

I do not understand. If you can type into a cell, you have selected that cell. If you can enter a formula into a cell, you have selected that cell.

If your table is very large, it might take a while "calculating" after you enter a formula or data into a cell. It puts "calculating" on the screen when it is doing it. Excel is better for large spreadsheets.

Now I see what you are talking about. Do you have any 3rd-party software running in the background that does things to the cursor or clipboard or keyboard? In the past, weird things related to the mouse (or keyboard or clipboard) in Numbers have often been caused by one of these "helper" apps that are meant to "extend" the features of the mouse (or keyboard or clipboard).
