iPhone *extremely loud* screeching noise while making phone calls with wired earbuds

I have an iPhone Xr and, typically, 1-2 times a day while I'm making phone calls with wired earbuds, there is an extremely loud and unsafe piercing noise that lasts for several seconds and then goes away. This doesn't happen when I'm using airpods or when I use the wired earbuds on a different iPhone. HELP!

iPhone XR

Hi AaronTheGreatest,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you hear a loud sound when using wired headphone with iPhone. Make sure that the headphones are compatible with iPhone. You can check on the box or with the manufacturer. Also, check for damage along the cable. This could be caused by interference. Interference can be caused by a number of sources such as microwaves, magnets, and even fluorescent lights.

Regards.

Are you using headphones that plug directly into the lightning port? Or are you using an adapter that plugs into the phone and allows you to use headphones with an RCA plug? If the latter, I'd guess that your adapter is bad. If the former, I'd suggest cleaning out the port using something non-conductive like a toothpick. It's absolutely astonishing how much pocket lint can get lodged in there.
