Finder related tasks keep freezing/glitching M1 Max

Hi there,

I think I'm going crazy and I really hope one of you can help me out. Since last Friday I have been experiencing different issues regarding Finder-related tasks, and I can't figure out what is causing them. It started when I was working in InDesign- it sometimes showed me the 'wheel of death', which isn't common since I have a Macbook Pro M1 Max. At first, I thought this was related to Adobe, but I now seem to run into issues outside of using any Adobe software.

I made a list of all the issues I'm experiencing so far:

  • Finder freezes when saving something from within Adobe
  • Sidebar only shows iCloud Drive when trying to save something
  • Finder freezes when trying to copy file to another folder/dragging someting to trash
  • Saved files don’t show up on desktop after saving, only shows saved files after relaunching
  • Finder freezes when trying to open the Recent folder

Things I have tried so far:

  • Force quitting the Finder (I have to do this all the time now)
  • Restarting my Macbook
  • Check if I needed to free up space
  • Check if there are any updates for my Macbook

I would love to hear your thoughts on this, it really disturbs my workflow.

Thanks in advance!

Hi sherreb,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities.

To address your Mac freezing, open Activity Monitor. You can find it using Spotlight. Click on the CPU tab and see whether you have any tasks that is running at high CPU usage. You can click on the task and choose the hexagon icon with the X to close it.

Make sure that your apps used are all up-to-date.

Disable any anti-virus software installed.

Start Mac in safe mode where a health check is performed on the disk while also limited software is allowed to run.
