It appears that changing conversations in iMessage causes the screen to blink black for a split second when leaving one and going to the next. I don’t recall it doing this before 16.3.1. I don’t see this occurring anywhere else except iMessage. It doesn’t seem to do it when just reading, sending text it does.
The normal things, restart, soft reset did not change this behavior. It is very annoying.

I tried a few recommendations I have seen out there to no avail: 1/ reduce transparency setting enabled, 2/ turn off tru tone setting. Even with those settings, still issues and to your point, very random. Ironically, it seems to always be the leave conversation
Yes, when I touch the blue arrow, on the top left, to leave conversation it happens. Apple support ran a diagnostic test- To start the test, go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics > Start Diagnostics With Apple Support. But it did not correct it. They have asked me to video it happening but it is random and nobody seems to be around when it happens.
my Phone is doing the same so annoying. I have applecare plus and they won’t send me new phone. Without putting $1100 hold on credit card plus on top of that charging $200 for some other fee. I’m so frustrated I just got this phone new in April.
I am having the same issue and followed the steps to close messages app and reboot, but still an issue.

Support said to try Turing off Raise To Listen setting… just tried and will see if it fixes. Go to settings > messages > raise to listen > turn that off.

Did you turn off the Raise to Listen setting? It immediately fixed my issue. It was so random that I cannot imagine trying to screen record and capture it.
Turning off Raise to listen appears to have fix my issue also, hopefully for good
mine also does something weird randomly it’ll make sound like it’s disconnecting blutetooth or something and orange light comes on on top bar
I have the same problem. It is so annoying and disruptive. I have rebooted, reinstalled everything. Still does it. Come on Apple! I pay more for iphones to avoid glitchy problems like this.
