Not a comprehensive list:


1) If turning it on shows an screen saying Activation Lock, that 's a warning. Not a guarantee it's actually stolen but you won't be able to use it without removing the lock.


2) Only buying from Apple or an Authorized reseller means it isn't stolen.


3) Make sure there's no other names logged into the device and that Find My is disabled. All part of legitimate reselling What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
