For future reference, a forced restart would have fixed it as well. No waiting for the battery to drain.

Try a forced restart.

• Press and quickly release the volume up button

• Press and quickly release the volume down button

• Press and hold the side button.

• When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

How old is this device? I don't know if they would give you any credit for a non-working phone, but consider looking into a trade-in.
