iPad dock won't hold Apps

iPad 9th generation running iPadOS version 16.2 won't hold any apps I move there. I drag the app but when I release it disappears and goes back to where I dragged it from. Only one App in the dock - Settings. I turned iPad off and on.

Swiping up doesn’t show dock anymore Im on an iPad air 8 and my ipad hasn’t been updated since like 1 or a few weeks ago. before AND after that i could still access my dock and whatever that swipe tab thingamajig is (idk what it’s called) but just last night i used the multitasking bar (i usually swipe up, use the dock and move the app over to the side and i can open and close that using the tabs on the sides, again idk what their called) and i rarely use it so i clicked slide over to put youtube in there and now i can’t close it. i mean i can using the multitasking thing but it’s just so annoying. i also can’t open my dock anymore with the tab thing and i have no idea what to do

How do I move apps to the dock in iOS 17? After upgrading my iPhone 7 to an iPhone 15, and a soon to be unsupported iOS to iOS 17 I wanted to move apps to the first page of my home screen. Used to be you could make room on the dock by moving apps off of it and then use the dock to move apps back and forth from screen to screen. Well, apparently that does not work any more. I moved my phone and mail apps from the dock to a screen with some empty slots, but I cannot move anything onto the dock, INCLUDING trying to get my Mail and Phone apps back to the dock. How do I move apps to the dock?

Check there is a division in the Dock, it separates the "recently opened" apps, (right side), and the apps in dock, (left side). Try dragging your app to the left side, sure it will stay.
