Mac OS

Can anyone help me with this am in Mac OS X Lion rn and I try to upgrade to el captain but I already install the upgrade from Apple website and I try open it but it say “The following disk images couldn’t be opened reason not recognized” the files name is “InstallMacOSX.dmg” how can I open this?

Try opening and building an installer on a Mac that can run El Capitan, and is running something newer than Lion.


Alternatively, see if you can get macOS Recovery on that Mac to download the latest version of macOS that the old Mac here can run.


That’s Option-Command-R, as described here: Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac - Apple Support

Is the following sequence not working? Are you double-clicking on the dmg file to mount the dmg disk image?


  1. Click the link to download a disk image (.dmg) file for that macOS.
  2. Double-click the .dmg file to open it and see the .pkg file within.
  3. Double-click the .pkg file, then follow the onscreen instructions. This installs the macOS installer into your Applications folder.
  4. Open your Applications folder and double-click the macOS installer, named Install [Version Name]. Follow the onscreen instructions to install macOS.
