Connecting to internet without a SIM card

I am attempting to connect to wi-fi using an iPhone without a SIM card. The phone is already set up. In the settings, it shows that I am connected to wi-fi. But the antenna icon appears briefly and then disappears, so no internet access. I am stumped. The other devices on the same wi-fi network (my home network) work fine with no issues. Anyone else had this issue?

I haven't experienced it, but there are no problems with using an iPhone without a SIM card - it's just an iPod after all.
