An iPad battery is rated to maintain at least 80% of its initial capacity after 1000 full charge/discharge cycles. Key to maintaining the battery at peak performance is to charge the iPad regularly. Other than keeping the battery with some level of charge, there are no special charging requirements - although keeping the battery between 20-80% of its maximum charge will reportedly maximise its overall life.
Avoid total discharge - and recharge promptly if you do fully discharge the battery. Never allow a fully depleted battery to be fully depleted to go uncharged for any period of time - as the battery may be damaged and never recover.
