Elegant novel template using for KDP upload but cover problems

My first time using apple pages to create an EPUB and chose the elegant novel template.

Trouble is KDP asks users to upload the front and back cover separately to the EPUB but

in this pages template you cannot delete the top page which I assume is the cover. Also,

sizing is a problem because KDP wants a specific dimension and I had to create it in PS and then create the pdf from there but for it to work you need to resize the text from pages

to fit in lefthand corner so lots of fiddling around. Now I need to upload an EPUB sans the cover page in pages yet no insertion of break or page will allow it because of course it is a template. Finally, my book is a children's fiction mostly made of text (flowing) but also a few illustrations on some of the opposite blank pages of the chapter page. The illustrations are carefully placed to coincide with the story so it is hard to know whether to choose fixed or flowing in settings. Also I choose not to have a contents or number the pages because it is a short story with only 7 x 1 page chapters.

So my questions are:

1) How to remove the cover page from the template? specifically "elegant novel".

2) How to get the dimensions of the cover part of template to fit to KDP cover template ? (...has me baffled! You think it would be simple maths but there is more to it with resolution and bleed. Also pages gives no HEX numbers for template text colours - bah)

3) Flow or not to flow that is the question? When you have mainly text but some well placed illustration.

4) Why does the elegant novel template position the chapter on left side and have no numbered pages or contents? (I am not actually using numbered pages or contents page, as I said, but curious and I have repositioned all my chapters on the right side)

This is a facing page Layout format template. You can select the cover page and then File menu > Print > Range Pages 1 to 1, and then PDF > Save as PDF. That will save the cover as a separate PDF document.

Back in Pages, View menu > Page Thumbnails. Click on the thumbnail that is the cover sheet image. Right-click on that Layout document thumbnail and choose Delete. That will remove only the cover sheet and in the Pages Export To > Epub, you would select ⌾ No book cover.

Since Pages was designed to send EPUBS to Apple Books, there may be other issues involved when making it a KDP EBOOK.

Tested: Pages v12.2.1 and Ventura 13.2.

Thanks for tip on exporting only front cover by saving in print mode - I do that a lot so not sure why I didn’t think of that here ! In the end the whole thing was exported as pdf and that was the only way it worked on KDP. If you export as epub it won’t work as fixed layout and you end up with blank pages. And actually I was opening pages pdf in acrobat to get the cover but dimensions were wrong for kdp template even though supposed to be sane dimension so I don’t think exporting the cover from pages would actually work.
