Contact linking

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! To link contacts, you'll want to ensure you are following the steps below:

Link contacts in Contacts on Mac

In the Contacts app  on your Mac, do any of the following:

Link cards: In the list of contacts, select the cards you want to link, then choose Card > Link Selected Cards.

If you have a duplicate card in one account and a card for the same contact in another account, choose Card > Merge and Link Selected Cards.

In that case, this could potentially be in relation to syncing the contacts via Gmail. It may be possible that Gmail is unlinking them in some fashion. If you test with locally saved contacts that do not sync via Gmail and it resolves the issue, this would confirm that.

I don't use gmail or google contacts, and I also have this issue. I have some contacts in my personal iCloud and my family iCloud, and I can't get them to stay linked.
