Battery for iPod touch

Regarding replacing the IPod Touch battery.

I have the IPod Touch 5th generation. Model MD 718 LL/A.

It is about 9 years old

I know that the IPod Touch is no longer being made.

The original battery for my IPod Touch still works,

but will eventually die.

Will I be able to buy a new battery to replace the

old battery when it dies?

How can I buy the new battery? Do they still make them?

Who will replace it?

Can I have the Apple store near me replace it?

Let’s say the IPod’s battery has died.
And let's say I can get either the dead battery or the IPod charged via my computer,
using a USB cable, and it gets the IPod to function. Then I can do this method whenever necessary.
Why then do I need a power bank?

Once the battery in the iPod becomes old, it cannot hold the charge as well as it used to do. So when you charge it, the battery does not last as long between charges as it used to do, which means that if you're away from home, the iPod may run out of power part way through your day. So the purpose of a power bank is so that you can continue to use your iPod even when you're away from a charging point and the iPod's internal battery has run down or drained.

And let's say I can get either the dead battery or the IPod charged via my computer,

The dead battery and the iPod are effectively one and the same thing, except that you charge the battery, not the iPod (refer to the sentence marked *, below)

If you use a power bank you can charge it (the power bank) to full and take it with you. Then, when the iPod's battery is too low (part way through your day), you can plug the power bank into the iPod to:

    • charge the iPod's battery, then unplug the power bank and continue to use the iPod
    • run the iPod even if the internal battery isn't charged enough. In other words, the power bank is both charging the iPod's battery and running the iPod

However, eventually the iPod's battery will be unable to maintain any charge at all. It's at this point that there may be a problem.

It's my experience that once an internal battery becomes too weak to take any charge, the iPod will not work, even if a power bank or wall charger are used. I think this is the scenario that the Apple tech was referring to.

* Take into account that we (in this discussion) have been clumsy with the use of words and that has lead to misunderstanding:

    • a dead battery is one that can no longer be charged because it has reached the end of its life
    • a drained battery is one that has run out of charge
    • a battery may be partly drained (for example 15-85% charge remaining) or fully drained (0-10% charge remaining). When partly drained it still has power to run the iPod
    • the battery has run down. Another way of saying that the battery is drained (or fully drained). The battery no longer has enough power to run the iPod

and you said that:

Apple said it will not work if the battery is dead!

I believe that statement is correct. If anyone can confirm or refute this, using a dead battery, not a drained one, please do so.

The type of batteries used in iPods do not like being left fully drained for extended periods of time. If they are, they may not be re-chargeable.

I thought I was clear about my meaning of dead battery.

That I was not writing about just charging it.

Charging it was never a problem.

It looks like the answer is no.
