What is adding a +1 to incoming text messages on my iPad? This makes the use of contacts useless for showing who sent the message. This happens only on my iPad and not my iPhone, both are synced for contacts. Seems like a recent problem for me.

Thanks for the effort but the same conversation participants on a new texting worked fine. So, the problem seems intermittent and is the worst case to solve. I will wait for new software to solve this one.
All the texts are blue, no SMS. I had already shutdown all apps and powered off the iPad. All my software is current, including IOS which just went to 16.3.
