runaway kernel-task

My macbook pro 2017 suddenly got very slow yesterday and when I opened activity monitor I saw a kernel-task using 70% of the cpu. I tried booting in safe mode and had the same problem. I tried resetting the SMC, that didn't work either. I ran diagnostics and it said there may be an issue with the SMC (ref code: PFM006), and there may be an issue with the power management system (ref code: PPN001). What can I do?

Usually that will mean a bad Logic Board which will need to replaced. Have Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider examine the laptop to confirm the issue and provide you with a repair estimate.

You can try an SMC Reset.
