Can I log out of messenger on my iPhone directly? Solutions I have found on Google don't work.

Are you asking about Messenger, the Facebook messaging app? Or are you asking about iMessages, the Apple Messaging service. If you're asking about iMessage, go to Settings>Messages>iMessage and turn it off.

If you're asking about Messenger, you should probably consult FB's help documentation.
