iPad settings app wants me to confirm my passcode after I just used it to unlock my iPad even though I haven’t changed it

Why would Apple ask me for my passcode? I think my iPad has been infected with some kind of malware trying to steal my passcodes. Could someone be trying to change it remotely?

I am using the latest iPadOS 16.2

About Apple Passcodes:

A. When Doees this Pop Up?

Are you doing something, and then this pops up? Or is it intermittent.

B. If Intermittent Popups:

Apple would never ask you upfront for your passcode. So, if intermittent, and asking you for it then this is a scam.

If a Scam Message:

A. Force Restart your iPhone:

To safely get out of this, Force Restart your iPhone. Go here: Force Restart iPhone - Apple Support

B. Report this to Apple:

So, report this messages info to Apple, and your federal government, if an option. Provide the screenshot and the URL of this thread. Use my User: Using the Photos App to Report Scams - User Tip

I just noticed it. It shows up as a new top-level option in the settings app, “Confirm iPad Passcode”. It persists after I force close the app and restart it and after I force restart the iPad as described here: Restart iPad - Apple Support

I thought I was reporting this to Apple?

Something else I don’t understand is that I have to use my thumb to use my Apple ID to log in to this website multiple times just to submit a reply, my session keeps expiring immediately after I log in and until I refresh the page, but that doesn’t count either apparently.

If you are being prompted for your AppleID Password from within the Settings App, the request is benign - and is of no concern. While not a frequent event, an Apple service signed-in from Settings must sometimes be re-authenticated.

By contrast, if you are unexpectedly prompted for your AppleID credentials by a website, or a pop-up message appears while using a website - this may be phishing attempt. Simply close the browser window or pop-up message; providing you have not entered your AppleID credentials, you have nothing to worry about.

Similarly, if a non-Apple App unexpectedly prompts for your AppleID Password, this may be something that requires further investigation.

If you believe that you have accidentally exposed your AppleID or Password, follow the advice outlined here:
