I have a 27" iMac mid-2011 that I want to use as an external monitor for my HP laptop. I bought an Apple Thunderbolt cable and StarTech TB3 to TB adapter to plug into my laptop Thunderbolt port. Sadly however many times I press Cmd - F2 on my iMac nothing happens. Any ideas?

Our experience is that it doesn't and Apple does not mention non-Apple devices at all in the article.
It *might* work on some PC's if they use the exact same hardware Apple uses, which is where the articles come from, but that is a guess on my part. It is not a general solution.
Target Display Mode doesn't support non-Apple devices.
I searched 'iMac as PC monitor' and several articles that said it works ....
