iPad keeps timing out of recovery mode, and since iTunes doesn't exist anymore, the download stops as soon as the iPad disconnects.

My kid put a passcode on the iPad only to promptly forget it-- of coured se. The iPad is now disabled by entering the incorrect passcode too many times.

I put it in recovery mode and connect to my Macbook-- but it's an M1 with Big Sur installed, and iTunes is no longer an option.

Finder pops up when the iPad is connected in recovery mode, and I am able to start the ipad software download no problem. However, it's a 5gig file, and it takes far more than 15 minutes to download on my rural internet connection.

The iPad times out of recovery mode after 15 minutes, and as soon as it does, the associated Finder window closes and the software download disappears.

This seems like a ridiculous oversight on the part of Apple. What can I do to get out of this silly circle and finally restore my iPad?!

Hi beckers999,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

If the iPadOS is version 15.2 or higher, then you won't need a computer to resolve the issue when following these steps: If you see an iPhone or iPad unavailable message or Security Lockout screen.

Otherwise, you may need to find a more reliable internet connection. If you don't have another one to use, you can get this done at an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider: Contact Apple Support.

Have a fantastic day!
