For some reason 10.6's preview will not save check boxes in PDF forms, you can click them but as soon as you save them they disappear. Yet when I open the saved file in Acrobat Reader the check marks are there.
Does anyone have a workaround for Preview?

Any PDF form field that uses Adobe's Acrobat JavaScript (AcroJS) for form field processing will be ignored in Preview, and recognized in the current version of Acrobat Reader DC. Use the latter for foolproof PDF form processing.
