When using an internal NVMe SSD, you must use macOS 10.13+ since older versions of macOS don't have the necessary NVMe driver needed to communicate with the NVMe SSD. Also, the laptop's firmware must already have been updated to support an NVMe SSD before installing an NVMe SSD. Installing macOS 10.13+ on this laptop will update the laptop's firmware (the original Apple SSD must still be installed internally and still functional in order to install macOS 10.13+ even when installing macOS to an external drive).

FYI, the Sintech internal SSD adapter seems to be the one which is most reliable & compatible. Also, not all SSDs are compatible with all computers.
