Walkie-talkie on Apple Watch doesn’t work without personal iPhone

We have several Apple Watches in the family and I gave an Apple Watch SE to one of my kids. The Apple Watch has a data-enabled SIM card, but doesn’t have a personal paired iPhone (I preferred not to give dedicated iPhones to the kids), even though his watch is paired with my iPhone (so is my Apple Watch Ultra). However, when we tried to set up Walkie-talkie function, it says the Watch needs to be signed in to FaceTime. Apparently, one cannot do it when there is no dedicated iPhone with signed in FaceTime. Is there a workaround?

Thanks for the reply. That’s exactly the point - the watch has no dedicated iPhone paired with it. Does that mean that walkie-talkie will never work if there is no iPhone to sign in to FaceTime on? Is there maybe another way to sign the watch into FaceTime without the iPhone?

Hello CHPharaoh,

We would like to see how we can help you with Walkie-Talkie. Check out the requirements below, which cover what you need to Use Walkie-Talkie on your Apple Watch.

To use Walkie-Talkie, you and your son both need Apple Watch Series 1 or later with watchOS 5.3 or later. You also both need to set up the FaceTime app on your iPhone with iOS 12.4 and be able to make and receive FaceTime audio calls.

These requirements would need to be met in order to use Walkie-Talkie.

Cheers!
