Accessory not supported

My Apple Pencil will not connect no matter how many time I try plugging it into my iPad. It’s a generation 1 pencil and I keep getting the accessory not supported message even though my pencil is charged and I’ve tried turning it off 4 times. Yes Bluetooth is on.
