i was transferring my info from my iPhone to my new iPad. Some of my wife’s contacts then appeared on my phone and the new ipad. How did this happen? When I tried to erase them from my phone her contacts were then erased from her iphone

Presumably both your iPad and your wife’s iPhone are sharing an AppleID? If so, this is the cause of your issue. If you share an AppleID, you’ll encounter all kinds of issues, including unintended sharing, addition and deletion of data.
Each user should have their own AppleID account - this being used with their own devices.
