Importing iTunes library from a Mac to Music library in another Mac

When I export the library it generated a .xml file but when trying to choose another library (starting Music while holding options) the .xml file is greyed out. Apparently, it expects a .itl file (according to another post in the community).

I have previously imported the library but the Music app does not show my lists and importing lists doesn't work. Any ideas please

See Move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Community. The XML file alone without the media files is like having an index to a book without the rest of the pages. If you've copied over the media files separately then for the XML import to work (File > Library > Import Playlist...) the files must be at the same paths defined in the XML file. The option-start-Music method to choose a library expects either a .musiclibrary package or a .itl file. Monterey has an issue converting .itl files and often hangs, but Ventura seems to be OK.

Hi

Thank you for trying to help, yes I have copied the media to the Monterey Mac. Following your post, I checked and noticed that on the latter, the setting/ location of the files was different to the actual location of media files, i.e., there was an additional third "music" folder on the path (created by Mac) that I removed.

It didn't occur to me to look into the XML file but your flag was useful as I discovered-trying to open it- that the first export (XML file) was corrupt and I had to export the library from Mojave again. It seems that now have a resemblance of normality bar a few missing playlists that I can forego.

One thing though: the path to media files on the XML exported from the old computer (Mojave) is different to the actual one on Monterey but since it worked I can't complain!

Thanks again for helping.
