If an SSD drive can be added via SATA, does the system view this as a separate drive or as a singular unit like as seen with a fusion drive set up. Thank you.

It would be an independent drive unless you took steps to create a Fusion drive by combining it with the PCIe stick.

Nope, for internal. However if you put it in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure you can use it as an external SSD.
