How do I open my iPhotos if they were saved on an external drive with a pre-macOS Catalina system?

How do I open my iPhotos if they were saved on an external drive with a pre-macOS Catalina system? When I try to open my iPhoto gallery, I get this message: iPhoto isn’t supported in this version of macOS. Please upgrade to Photos. How do I upgrade to Photos on an external drive?

You don't. You simply use Photos to create a new Library. Launch Photos with the option key held down. from the dialog, navigate to your external and choose your library. Photos will create a new library.

Note that this only applies pre-Ventura.
