Ventura font smoothing issue on 2019 MBP with Samsung M8 Monitor over HDMI; USB-C works great

I recently purchased a Samsung M8 Monitor. Love it. Connected it through the USB-C/Display Port connection and that works great. Beautiful even at full 3840x2160.

But using the HDMI connection it seems that font smoothing/anti-aliasing gets disabled and the text on the screen looks atrocious.

I can't find a font smoothing control in the Ventura System Settings.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Hello rarelph,

Ensuring you're getting the image quality that's expected when connecting your Mac to the display is important. To confirm, have you tested a different HDMI cable to help isolate the issue further? The reason we ask is due to the issue not happening when using a different connection type. That greatly helps with isolating the issue. You can also change the display settings using the steps listed below. You can also find these steps outlined in the following article.

  1. Click System Settings.
  2. Click Displays.

Once in displays, you can adjust various settings that may help with improving the image quality.
