I have an iPhone and iPad. I can FaceTime my sons iCloud email address from my iPad, but when I try to FaceTime him from my phone it just rings on my end but never goes through to his iPad…he only has an iPad with an iCloud email address.

You said your son has an iCloud account as well as a gmail account. You also said “He only has an iPad with an iCloud email address”. These two statements contradict each other regarding email addresses. Perhaps his Apple ID is actually his gmail address.
Check “Settings > FaceTime > You can be reached by FaceTime at” on your son’s iPad and be certain the address you’re using is accepted.

Yep and it turns red! It’s treating it like a non apple address in my phone, when I do that in my iPad no problem…he’s 10 and I need to be able to FaceTime him from my phone when I am out of the house! Really appreciate you trying to help. I may have to bring both in to apple?
Thank you for responding. He has his own Apple ID. I have the settings in FaceTime so that he can be reached by the @icloud.com address. I created a nickname contact for him with just his icloud email account to see if that would work (he also has an gmail acct) and when I go in via contacts the option to FaceTime him is not highlighted. To make things even more strange when I go into FaceTime and the previous calls are listed it has him listed as the nickname account and if I click on it, it calls him! His regular contact entry says I can FaceTime him and it rings but it does not come up on his screen. Again no issues if I use my iPad, it’s the strangest thing!
Yes sorry for the confusion, he has an iCloud account and that is his Apple ID, he also has a gmail acct that is not set up to receive FaceTime calls but I added that in hopes it would help and it has not…it’s like my phone is treating him as a non apple user but not my iPad. Will go to the Apple Store today with his iPad, my iPad and my phone to see if they can figure this out bc I am confused. Thanks for your suggestions.
Are you sharing an Apple ID with your son? If so, stop doing that immediately. If not, check Settings > FaceTime > You can be reached by FaceTime at - and be certain it is set correctly.
Have you tried spelling out his Apple ID (instead of using a nickname) in the addressee field when initiating a FaceTime call from your iPhone?
