Unable to set up Apple Watch series 3

Hi have bought a second hand Apple Watch Series 3 I am attempting to pair the watch to my iPhone 13. The watch is saying need updating gets to preparing and then disconnects. Watch is on charge and phone connected to Wi-Fi and next to watch.

is anyone able to help this issue.
