what can i do to download/open these? does it mean there is malware or such linked to this file? is it safe to download/ upload?

.dmg files are used to install softwares on MacOS, just like .exe on Windows. The safety depends upon the source from where you download these files, e.g., If you want to download chrome then the safest option is to download it through the official website (www.google.com) & the same condition applies to other apps too. But if you download it from an unofficial site then there is possibility that the file could have been manipulated and contains some malware. And the process to open .dmg file is similar to opening all other files : by clicking on it.
