Flash SMS messages still a major problem

My wife is getting “Flash” SMS messages that contain spam links and they pop over top of whatever she’s doing randomly and interrupt her workflow and can’t be dismissed unless clicking on what looks like part of the message. You can’t switch task out of it or anything… the only option is push on a sus-looking Dismiss button or reboot the phone.

Being a security writer this catches my attention. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and could be abused in a number of ways. Is this a vulnerability or a purposeful design?

Do you know which level of support is required at the carrier to get them blocked?

My mom started receiving them on her device today and so far AT&T seems totally and completely flabbergasted. We’ve only made it to Tier 2 and are waiting on a manager to call back. I suspect, based on my prior tech support experience, that this is an issue that will need to go up to the engineers because the grunts answering the phones can barely comprehend that these are not regular text messages. I finally told Tier 2 to “google it” because I got tired of repeating myself.

This is an issue. Why does the government need an additional way to alert when we already have both Emergency Alerts and Amber Alerts we can control from settings? And those are already misused by the government entities using them.
