failed to personalize

I have an M1 mac book pro. Trying to update from Monterey to Ventura but i have always the "failed to personalize" error. The apple help is useless, the solutions they give on their page are simply not working. Does anybody know how to solve the problem?

Is the user referring to this article in below link ?

If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS

Update would be updating from Monterey 12.6.1 to Monterey 12.6.2 the Latest Stable Version of Monterey

An upGrade would be moving from Monterey macOS 12 to Ventura macOS 13

Exactly what version of Monterey is installed on the problematic computer.

Perhaps a Screen Shot of " About this Mac " will help, without the Serial Number appearing in the image

There are factors:

1 - Like poor Wifi connection

2 - Slow wifi connection

3 - Too many other people downloading at the same time and Apple Severs are overloaded

4 - Software on the computer interfering with the download process including AntiVirus Software

Notation: Disabling the AV Software may or may not solve the issue. Removal of the AV Software may increase the chances of the download to perform as expected.

5 - Running behind a VPN which may increase Packet losses or corruption of the download

6 - If via wifi too many Other devices using the wifi at the same time reducing the Bandwidth to your computer.

7 - Best Results are via Ethernet Cable to Router

8 - Restart in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal and Try Again using the Software Update Applet in System Preferences

9 - Worst case and refer to below

In Terminal and copy and paste the below command

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

It will only search for Full Versions of macOS this computer Qualifies to run

It should present Ventura 13.1 in the Terminal Output

If Yes, the follow command

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 13.1

This will Pull the Full Version of Ventura 13.1 ( about 12.26 GB in size.)

It will create a new application called " Install Ventura " in the applications folder

It Will Not Auto Launch

Once ready and after performing a TM Backup

Just launch the application like any other application and follow the prompts

A couple of things that Jump to me.

1 - Is this a Personal computer and Not Enrolled in a Mobile Digital Management ( MDM Service )

2 - Is this computer Owned by a Company and the IT Department has Enrolled the machine in a Mobile Digital Management ( MDM Service )

3 - How much Empty Space in presently available on this computer. It is suggested to have at least 50 GB of Empty Space for the Full Version of Ventura to download, expand and then install.

4 - Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS,  is an invitation for disaster and comprise the Operating System

Certain Applications maybe available on the Apple Apps Store - this only means the Developer is prepared to pay Apple a portion on each sale. What the Application may do to the computer is up to the User to check this out before purchase

Any of the below should be removed as per Developers Instructions

This will include CleanMyMac , This will include BitDefender

This will included Norton Antivirus , Sophos Av Software

Intego AntiVirus, McAfee, MacKeeper, Avast AntiVirus

Ad Guard, Webroot , ESET , Avira , Dr Cleaner Pro Plus

AVG AntiVirus   avira antivirus

Trustee

AntiVirus for Mac

F-Secure

I remember someone posting information on this error a while back on these forums, but unfortunately I don't recall the fix and I'm unable to find the post. The one thread on another forum mentioned they resolved the issue by performing the update/upgrade on another network. Maybe power cycle your router and make sure you have a good network connection.

To eliminate your network as a problem, create a bootable macOS USB installer using the instructions in this Apple article:

Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

When booted from the installer, make sure to select the "Macintosh HD" volume as the destination. You do not want to select the one with " - Data" in the name or it will cause another problem which you will need to resolve.
