Continuity Camera

I have recently bought a Mac Mini, and an iPhone 14 Pro Max - I was glad to find out afterwards that I would be able to use my iPhone as a webcam or facetime camera while working, but sadly it's extremely buggy.

More often than not it doesn't work at all, sometimes it works with a lightning to USBC cable, sometimes it doesn't.

I've tried all the usual things found when searching for a solution, for example ensuring the phone is in the correct orientation, signed out and back into Apple ID on both devices, but I just can't get a stable connection. I've managed just one call on camera.

Interestingly it works perfectly with my Macbook M1 Air, connects immediately. But thats not so conventient as I'm at my desktop for most of the day.

Are Apple aware of this problem? Do we foresee a potential fix soon?

Hey Cibbers,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. You've tried some great troubleshooting steps already. Although it sounds like your iPhone does connect, we'd recommend also trying all steps in the following section of Use your iPhone as a webcam on your Mac. Those steps can be helpful in clearing up many issues with Continuity Camera.

"If you don’t see your iPhone as a camera or microphone option

If you don’t see your iPhone in the camera or microphone list in an app or Sound settings, try the following.

  1. Connect it to your Mac with a USB cable and check again. (If it’s already connected with a cable, disconnect it and reconnect it.)
  2. Check the following:
    • Your iPhone is an iPhone XR or later.
    • Your iPhone has the latest version of iOS 16.
    • Your Mac has the latest version of macOS Ventura.
    • Your iPhone has Continuity Camera Webcam turned on in Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff.
    • Your iPhone recognizes the Mac as a trusted computer. See the Apple Support article About the ‘Trust This Computer’ alert on your iPhone or iPad.
    • Your iPhone and Mac have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and two-factor authentication turned on.
    • Your iPhone and Mac are signed in with the same Apple ID. (This feature doesn’t work with Managed Apple IDs.)
    • Your iPhone and Mac are within 30 feet of each other.
    • Your iPhone isn’t sharing its cellular connection, and your Mac isn’t sharing its internet connection.
    • Your chosen video app is updated to the latest version."

If the same continues, you may need to have Apple look in to this further as it sounds like something possibly unexpected. You can reach out directly from Apple Support.

All the best.
