Advanced Data Protection Cannot Add Recovery Contact

When I try to turn advanced data protection on, I cannot add my wife as a recovery contact. When I send the request to her, it shows up on my phone as request sent, but there is no option for her to accept the request. She’s a part of my family sharing, so according to Apple, she should automatically be added when I send the request, but she isn’t.

I’ve tried deleting and resending the request multiple times to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!

Hello Kaitown_99,

Let's use the steps below to make sure your iPhone is all up to date:

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

You can also find those steps in this resource: Update your iPhone or iPad

If your iPhone is all up to date, let's restart: Restart your iPhone

Updating and restarting can sometimes help address odd behaviors.

Should that still persist, what type of device is your wife using? Does that persist if she restarts her device?

Let us know, and we'll keep moving forward based on those details.
