Stop music from taking over my iPhone

I like the music app and occasionally listen to it but I’m getting annoyed with it taking over my AirPods, CarPlay and hearing aids. When I’m at work and listening to my latest audiobook I often have to pause it for a few minutes while talking to someone. When I press the button to restart my book it goes to the music app on its own about 3 times out of ten. I then have to stop what I’m doing, open the phone and go to the app I want and launch it. Music isn’t even open, often hasn’t been open for weeks, and it’s annoying.

I have restarted my phone multiple times, kept it updated, and even replaced it a few times in the years that this has been a problem. I have been told just to delete it but I like some of the functions that it controls and occasionally listen to it on long drives.

Besides deleting it, is there a way to resolve this? If a techie from Apple suggests restarting or updating my phone I WILL delete it since that response only reinforces a negative rumor that I don’t want to believe.

Thank you for the reply andrew.4th!

Let's make sure Autoplay is turned off by following the actions under the "Let Autoplay pick what plays next" section here: Add music to your queue to play next on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device

"Autoplay takes the work out of choosing what to play next. Just play a song, then Autoplay finds similar songs and plays them afterward.

To see your Autoplay queue:

    1. Tap the song that's playing at the bottom of your screen.
    2. In the lower-right corner of your screen, tap Playing Next the Playing Next icon.
    3. Scroll down to Autoplay.

To turn Autoplay on or off, tap the Autoplay button the Autoplay button icon in the upper-right corner of your screen. If you turn off Autoplay on one of your devices, then Autoplay is turned off on any device that's signed in with your Apple ID."

If the issue persists, reach out to Apple directly to investigate:

Hello andrew.4th,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help resolve the issue so your book continues to play after you unpause it.

As this does sound like a software issue where the book should continue, we do suggest updating your iOS to the latest version.

Having the latest version can help make sure the software is working as expected. This Apple Support page can help get those updates installed: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

See here:

"Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do."

We hope this helps to resolve the software issue causing the music to play instead of your book.

Cheers!

Justin,

I'm sorry but that is neither helpful, useful nor applicable. This has been an issue for YEARS, over multiple phones, multiple iOSes, and with multiple apps. I keep my software up to date and even was a beta tester for Apple for iOS for several years. This is a bug or (shiver) a programmed response within the iOS that has been a continuous problem. Outside sources have been able to resolve it by deleting the music app, which I am about to that point. I was hoping that my favorite manufacturer since 1986 would have a better response than, "update and restart" when that hasn't fixed it for years.

Is there anything else to try other than remove music from the phone?

Thank you!!! I tried it and it worked great, even with the music app open it went back to playing the audiobook I was listening to.

Your response is exactly the kind of help I needed and appreciate. Sorry but after marking your response as the best answer it won’t let me mark it as helpful even though the other one was able to be marked helpful.
