TimeMachine to Samba share broke on 3 of 5 Macs with Ventura

I have 5 macs (1 M1 mini, 4 M1 airs) all of which have been using TM to back up to (ubuntu) Samba shares. This worked fine until MacOS 13 was installed. Now 3 of the 5 (3 of the airs) are no longer able to back up, claiming they cannot connect to the drive. The mini and one of the airs are still backing up fine.

The macs that cannot back up can see the share fine. With one of them I deleted the backup destination and then re-added it. When I add it it sees the share fine, lets me log in with the password, and recognizes that there is an existing backup and asks if I want to continue it or start a new one. But when it actually tries to run the backup it stays at "connecting" and has never completed a backup.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Bruce

Basically Macs dropped support for Samba/SMB1 (as did Windows) years ago. Currently, Macs use SMB3 to connect to shares. However, there are still workarounds to use earlier SMB versions, Including SMB1.

AFAIK, the last version of OS X to use Samba was 10.6 (Snow Leopard.) Apple started using SMB2 with OS X 10.9 (Mavericks,) and currently has been using SMB3 since OS X 10.10 (Yosemite.)

Regardless, Time Machine backing up to a network drive, uses SMB3. (I know because I use a Synology NAS for TM.) So the first question I have for you, are your Samba shares configured to support this protocol?

Why this did work before, and now doesn't, is something that needs further troubleshooting. FWIW, I have a number of Macs running macOS Ventura that are not having any issue running TM backups to network drives. What I don't have available is any Linux-based servers to verify SMB file transfers.
