Unlock iPhone carrier unavailable

I have an old iPhone 6s which I reset and sold on eBay. The buyer, however, wants to unlock it for use with a different carrier and it seems to be SIM locked. However, because I erased the phone before selling it, it now says that the carrier is "unavailable." I'm pretty sure what the carrier was, but is there any way to unlock without knowing the carrier?

No. This is because that iPhone can only be unlocked by the carrier that it is locked to. Do you remember which carrier worked last on that iPhone when you were using it? If YES, then that is the carrier that should be contacted to get the iPhone unlocked.

No, only the carrier can unlock the phone so you would need to contact the carrier the phone is locked to.
