Strange number show up in text message in-sted of contact’s name

Thanks for that additional information. If you haven't already, you could try restarting your iPhone 7. Restarting can refresh the iOS and apps on a device, which can sometimes help resolve unexpected issues. If needed, the steps below show how:

"How to restart your iPhone 6, 7, 8, or SE (2nd or 3rd generation)

1. Press and hold the side button until the power-off slider appears.
2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo."

If that doesn't help, the next step you could also take is to note down the information for the contact this is happening with, then delete their contact and add it back. This will allow you to remove the contact and add a fresh copy back onto your iPhone, which may also help resolve this issue since its only happening with this contact.

Did the phone number that you saw match the phone number of the contact as shown in your Contacts app?

Does this happen with all contacts or does it only seem to be impacting one specific contact?
