Unable to create a station from songs

Hello,

Whenever I have my phone connected to car's Bluetooth, I have a problem with creating stations. I always receive the following message: Can't create station. Try again later.

Now, if I close the music app and then re-open it creating stations works just fine. Please take a look at the video below in which I present the issue.

https://imgur.com/a/V8SKPSO

I believe this is related somehow to how the music app behaves when connected to car's Bluetooth; since it always automatically starts playing the same song from my library every single time (basically creating a queuing of the same songs all the time) .

Is there a possibility you can tell me what the issue is here? Since it's getting really annoying.

Currently on IOS version 16.2 (but have had this issue for a long time).

What I have tried until now and didn't work:

  • uninstall music app and reinstall
  • factory reset Iphone
  • settings reset Iphone
  • factory reset Iphone and no backup/restore
  • different IOS versions (mentioned this before - had the issue for a long time)

Thank you,

Waiting for an answer

Hello MisticNom23,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

It sounds like you're only noticing this when connecting with your vehicle, is that correct?

If we have that correct, this may be related to the stereo itself as opposed to the iPhone or Apple Music. If you can test this by connecting your iPhone with another vehicle, let us know the results as that may be the quickest way to isolate this. For assistance with connecting to a different vehicle, check out the steps information below. You can find additional details in this resource: Play music and podcasts in your car - Apple Support

Ways to listen

Here are a few ways you can listen to audio in your car:

• If your car has Bluetooth, you can pair your iPhone to your car.

• If your car has a USB port, you can use a Lightning cable to connect your iPhone to your vehicle.

• If you have an Android device and subscribe to Apple Music, connect your Android device to your car to play audio using Android Auto.

• If Apple Music or Apple Podcasts is built into your vehicle, you can listen to music and podcasts without pairing your phone. Open the app from your car's display panel, then follow the onscreen instructions to sign in to your Apple ID that you use with Apple Music and Apple Podcasts. To complete setup, enter the verification code that you receive on your phone.

In addition, see if you can get Siri to create a station or shuffle music when you're connected with your vehicle. You can check out more details on how to shuffle music and use Siri in the following resource: How to shuffle music on your iPhone - Apple Support

If that doesn't help, check with your car manufacturer to see if they can assist with settings for the stereo. Some manufacturers may allow you to turn off auto-play in the settings of the stereo.

Have a great day!

Dear Brandon,

Firstly thank you for answering. I will answer your questions below:

It sounds like you're only noticing this when connecting with your vehicle, is that correct?

Yes, it is correct. The issue is happening when connected to my vehicle, BUT only until I restart the Apple Music app.

I would imagine that if the car stereo would be the issue, the problem with creating stations would still happen after Apple Music app restart - which is not; a restart of the Music app fixes the issue.

Could you please look into why would a car stereo device would affect an app functionality that should not depend on the output device?

In addition, see if you can get Siri to create a station or shuffle music when you're connected with your vehicle. You can check out more details on how to shuffle music and use Siri in the following resource: How to shuffle music on your iPhone - Apple Support

I'm sorry but I do not use Siri. I will give it a try and come back with an answer but I hope I will not have to resort to this method.

If that doesn't help, check with your car manufacturer to see if they can assist with settings for the stereo. Some manufacturers may allow you to turn off auto-play in the settings of the stereo.

I'm sorry but this issue is only affecting Apple Music app. I have used and tested with the following: Spotify, Tidal, Deezer and Youtube Music apps and none of these apps have the same behavior as Apple Music. Why would the manufacturer assist me if it is only an issue of one single app? They will just tell me to go talk with Apple.

Thank you and have a good day!

MisticNom23,

Auto-play, when connecting with a Bluetooth device or CarPlay device can be expected behavior and but not on the part of your iPhone's software. Since the Music app is the default app for music though, that's where the music plays from. What's happening is that the head unit is requesting something be played upon connection. So, sometimes, there is an option to turn that off. Referencing your vehicle's owner's manual may also provide information on whether that setting exists.

Another thing we'd like to have you test - when you see the message about not being able to create a station, if you disconnect from your vehicle but don't force close the Music app, does the issue persist? Are there any other issues streaming music at the time, and/or listening to stations or playlists that already exist?

Thanks.

Hello AnnieL2,

about not being able to create a station, if you disconnect from your
vehicle but don't force close the Music app, does the issue persist?

Yes, the issue still persists if I disconnect from vehicle and don't close the app. I have to close are reopen the Music app to fix creating stations.

Are there any other issues streaming music at the time, and/or listening to stations or playlists that already exist?

Playlists work fine, radios work fine.

Stations, even those created in the past (from category Recently Played), don't work.

For auto-play I have an example: I have both Apple Music and Spotify installed on my Iphone. If I listen to apple Music during the day and then connect to the car, music starts autoplaying. If, on the other hand, I listen to Spotify during the day and then I connect to the car, Spotify/Apple Music DON'T start autoplay.

So I experience autoplay ONLY when the last music service used before connecting to the car is Apple Music app.

Why doesn't Apple Music start autoplay (being default music app) also when Spotify is the last used music service app?

(Since this is not a big inconvenience we can leave the auto-play issue aside)

Thank you and have a good day!
