Hi Buck Mulligan,
We understand you're trying to log in with your Apple ID to your Mac, and the steps we've provided below can solve your issue.
The version of macOS you're using isn't built with compatibility for two-factor authentication in mind. What you'll need to do to log in is enter the code that's generated at the end of your password. When you're prompted to allow the login on your trusted device, then on the Mac with Yosemite retype your password but with the authentication code added to the end of it. If your password were 'Example' you would type 'Example123456' to enter the code.
Let us know if that helps you get logged in
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

Hi Rigo,
Thanks for your suggestion. I did try this previously without success. I tried again but it didn’t work. I also tried Apple support again without success.
The best they could come up was by making a new log in name. This works but is a very messy way (logging in/out) of sending emails. Especially if you are dealing with attachments.
Hey Buck Mulligan,
Understood. It sounds like you may have a resolution or workaround. Let us know if we can further assist, and have a good one.
Thanks. It was a longshot anyway. Just have to suck it up. My souped up MacBook Air 2011 was a great little machine and may last a few more years yet; but without email-on-tap its days are numbered.
